Work Reflection Log

After students complete a work assignment, ask them to reflect on what the work shows that they know or can do. This helps students understand that the work is part of a plan for mastering important objectives and not just something to do and turn in. Once a week, have students select one journal entry, one math assignment, one reading response activity, or any work that shows the student's independent use of strategies, skills, or conceptual knowledge.

Differentiating Reading Homework

Give your students a choice of reading response activities to complete for homework. Set a specific number of minutes to read independent level texts. Then have students choose 1 of the activities from the homework chart to complete. You can set a specific number of responses required for each grading period.

Within Writing Spelling Rubric

After a student has completed drafting and revising a written composition, ask the student to edit the composition for spelling errors. The student will circle all words he/she feels are misspelled. Then, using 3 key strategies, guide students in correcting spelling errors. Use this rubric to assess the student's awareness of misspelled words and application of knowledge of high frequency words, visual cues, and sound cues.

Cube Pattern

This is a printable template of a 3D cube. Print it on card stock. Then fill in the faces with questions for comprehension. After reading a book or listening to a story, students can roll the cube and answer comprehension questions. You can also make 2 cubes and put consonants and consonant blends on one cube and word families on the other. Roll both cubes and blend the 2 resulting sides to form a real or nonsense word.
