Word Sort cards: R-Controlled Words, Contractions, Plurals, Long A patterns, and 2 Syllable Words

These word sort cards are a perfect way to assess your 2nd and 3rd graders' knowledge of common decoding patterns. Ask students to read each word and then put words into groups that contain a similar pattern. I recommend you have students sort for 2-4 patterns at one time. After the sorting is complete, students should be able to explain why the words in each group go together. Students should use their knowledge of the patterns to read and spell other words containing these patterns.
