Prior knowledge, or background knowledge, is essential for making logical assumptions, conclusions, and claims. Many children lack the prior knowledge related to topics in the texts they are asked to read in school. As educators, we must plan to build and use prior knowledge to help students make sense of new learning.

One effective method to encourage critical thinking in young children is through educational games like "Guess in 10" or "Hedbanz." These games can significantly enhance their world knowledge while teaching them that retrieval and comprehension of concepts and facts are the basis of logical reasoning.

"Guess in 10" is an interactive card game that encourages players to ask up to ten yes-or-no questions to identify a specific animal, country, or object, promoting active learning and curiosity. Each game card features a picture and 3-4 simple fact phrases, making it accessible even to three-year-olds. You can download the directions for "Guess in 10" here.

"Hedbanz" is a game similar to "Twenty Questions." All you need is a headband and pictures of the content. Using your state social studies and science standards, identify the target vocabulary to create a customized and educational experience.

Incorporating these games into your teaching strategy can make learning more engaging and effective for young children.

By participating in "Guess in 10," children develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they formulate strategic questions to narrow down possibilities. The game's diverse themes introduce players to various topics, broadening their understanding of the world. Additionally, the social aspect of the game fosters communication skills and teamwork, as players collaborate and discuss potential answers.

Incorporating such games into educational activities offers a fun and engaging way for children to learn about different subjects, making the acquisition of world knowledge an enjoyable experience.
