RTI Reading: Techniques for Processing Learning

  • April 10, 2017, 3:43 p.m.

Meeting the needs of every student can be rewarding yet exhausting at the same time! Here are some fresh instructional ideas for helping students to process their learning.

Tiered Questions

"Whoever asks the questions, does the learning."

Create a set of tiered questions to help students process and extend their learning in a content area.

  • Detail Question
  • Comprehension Question
  • Inference Question
  • Evidence Question

Quick Question Writing

Have the students stop and write a question they think could be on a test. Give them question stems to use. Allow students about ninety seconds to write the question.

  • Who?
  • What?
  • Where?
  • Why?
  • How?

Have students share a couple of questions. You can collect the questions to use for a quick text review.

Jigsaw

Divide the content into chunks. Students choose, or are assigned, a chunk of the content to become the class expert(s). Each expert group creates a visual that teaches the important ideas about that topic.

Use technology to have students create a screencast for the content. They can also create a quiz using an application such as Google Forms or Kahoot.
